Olympus Pen E-P3

Fans of retro won’t go wrong with the Olympus E-P3. The E-P3 is the first E-P to come with a built-in flash, and it even comes with wireless flash support for additional lights. It’s also the first E-P to get a touch-screen, bringing with it the ability to touch to focus and touch to shoot (touch-screen controls are switched off by default for purists).

The E-P3 scores points for being the only camera in the list with image stabilization built into the camera body. It also has a gorgeous OLED monitor going for it, a handy control dial with scroll wheel combination for manual control, and the ability to tap left on the d-pad to manually select an AF area.

Olympus SP-610UZ

The first thing you’ll notice about the slim SP-610UZ, apart from the low price, is the lack of buttons and controls. There’s no command dial, even though there’s room for one, so changing the shooting mode involves an awkward trip to the onscreen menu.

You do get a dedicated button for shooting movies, which are recorded at 1,280 x 720 and 30fps, and a jog dial lets you scroll between menu options. There’s no manual control over shutter, aperture or focus, however, as the 5P-610UZ is aimed at novices.

The Olympus’ 14-megapixel sensor, 3in LCD screen and 22xzoom lens sound great for the price, but it quickly becomes apparent where corners have been cut. There’s no viewfinder, so you have to frame every shot using the low-resolution, 230kpixel LCD screen. Plus, you’ll need to budget extra for rechargeable batteries.

Olympus PEN E-P2

The new E-P2 is, in many ways, a simple update to the original E-Pl. But the new black and silver affair is 10 times closer to enabling you to be more like a serious photographer, and less like a tourist, than the original. The big change is that the camera kit now comes with a clip-on electronic viewfinder (EVF) that enables you to use the PEN at eye level, rather than forcing you to use the large LCD screen at the back. This pays dividends in bright light, and means you can concentrate better on the exposure information that the camera provides you with. The VF-2 viewfinder attachment slots into the hot shoe creating a bulge on this otherwise retro looking camera.

Olympus PEN E-P1

The timing of Olympus’ PEN E-Pl launch wasn’t a coincidence. Its 50 years since Olympus launched the original PEN. a revolutionary ‘half-frame’ camera that was eventually developed into an SLR with a ‘pro-finder’ rather than a conventional pentagrams, a design which resurfaced in the Olympus E-300 and E-330. There’s another non-coincidence here. The original Pen was a half-frame format (half a 35mm frame), and the Four Thirds/Micro Four Thirds format is half-frame too.

Olympus Mju Tough 8000

Cameras that don’t self-destruct when thoroughly doused are nothing new, but some are clearly better at taking a good soaking than others. The pinnacle of ‘webcam’ performance, however, is a camera that will keep on working when completely submerged.
The machismo of these commando-style cameras is measured by how deep you can take them beneath the brine. As any swimming pool diver will know, water pressure builds up fast the further you head below the surface.

Olympus SP-800UZ

Having a long lens that can zoom from wide-angle to close-up makes a camera useful for everything from portraits to panoramas. A good example is the Olympus SP-800UZ which has a 30x optical zoom lens, equivalent to a 28-840mm lens on an old 35mm film camera.
